Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,
A colleague often uses abbreviations in his emails to me. I understand the obvious ones such as FYI. But, others I'm not sure what they mean. Should abbreviations even be used in correspondence?
Signed,
Baffled
Dear Baffled,
Abbreviations should be avoided in business emails unless they are conventional abbreviations. Only the obvious ASAP (as soon as possible) FYI (for your information), and BTW (by the way) are understood by most people.
Just an FYI, below are some other email abbreviations or slang and their meaning.

IMHO: In my humble opinion
ICWUM: I see what you mean
LOL: Laughing out loud
NBIF: No basis in fact
NFC: No further comment
OBO: Or best offer
OBTW: Oh, by the way
OIC: Oh, I see
OTOH: On the other hand
POV: Point of view
ROTFL: Rolling on the floor laughing
TIA: Thanks in advance
TNSTAAFL: There's no such thing as a free lunch
TTFN: Ta ta for now
TTLY: Talk to you later
