Jeans Too Casual For Afternoon Play?





Dear Dr. Dave and Dr. Dee,

Is it proper to wear jeans to an afternoon play at a nice theater downtown? My husband does not like to dress up, and we have been given tickets to a play on a Saturday afternoon.

Some cities are more casual than others, so it depends on your location. Generally, for a play or musical, it's best to wear something nice, not jeans or t-shirts. Proper dress can vary anywhere from suit and tie to a pair of slacks and shirt for men, and a nice dress/skirt outfit or nice pants and blouse for women. Matinees tend to be more casual, and you will find more jeans at these events.
