I just noticed some white flakes all over my hair. Am I getting dandruff? What should I do?

Dear Flaking Out,
It is normal to have dead cells or tiny flakes on our scalp that are not noticeable and are removed after washing or brushing our hair. However, when the flakes become large and numerous and accompanied by itching then it becomes dandruff.
Dandruff forms on the scalp at the hairline and not normally all over the hair. It could be that you are using a hairspray or gel that is causing the flaking. Stop using the hairspray or gel and see what happens. If you still have dandruff, then follow these guidelines
1. Try a nonprescription dandruff shampoo.
2. Shampoo daily, and rinse well.
3. Use a dandruff conditioner after shampooing, and rinse well.
If the dandruff persists, then see a physician for other treatment options.
